The Chestertown Armory sale to Washington College seems more likely now that the Town Council will recommend the sale to the Maryland Department of General Services, which currently owns the property.
Ward-2 Councilman Gibson Anthony raised concerns about planning costs to the southeast section of Chestertown and proposed getting additional buy-in support from the College — since the appraised $1.5 million property was coming at a bargain price of $250,000. Gibson said the buy-in would help the Town with the cost of the comprehensive plan.
Washington College President Mitchell Reiss countered Gibson that the college would be investing over $3.5 million in the property and shouldering the environmental and legal liabilities in development — while creating a public access benefit to the town.
Gibson voted against the sale, not because he was against the sale, but because he was concerned about the process.
Town Manager Bill Ingersoll is finalizing a Memorandum of Understanding with WC governing public access to the Amory.

With the Town’s focus on the marina/waterfront, they have found a reliable partner and steward in Washington College for the armory property.
