A new cafe is opening soon on the corner of Cross and Cannon Sts, once the home of the Kettledrum restaurant. Lemon Leaf Cafe is right now serving meals only during the Chestertown Wildlife Festival — Thursday, Friday and Saturday this week — that are being catered in-house by Sisters By Chance caterers, Amy Magee and Joan Infield (who are, in fact, sisters, whose maiden name is Chance). The cafe itself won’t officially open until the end of the month, says Lemon Leaf’s proprietor, Galena native J.R. Alfree. Alfree was busy taking the lunch orders of a squadron of purple-clad Red Hat ladies, who had come in out of today’s rain.

I stopped in for lunch on Saturday and immediately thought of Hemingway’s quote, ” a clean, well lighted place.” Lunch was great, the owner was very personable and so were the staff. It has all the makings of a popular, comfortable cafe. Bravo!

My friends and I had a delicious lunch at this lovely cafe. The staff is friendly, a good menu is offered, and the food is well presented in addition to being delicious.
During our meal, a weather system produced a heavy deluge which flooded the curbs and sidewalk. When we were ready to leave, the owner, Mr. Alfree, escorted us to our car with an umbrella. Even with an umbrella, he quickly became soaked. I was impressed!
How often do you find a place with so many qualities?
