Snow Hammers Kent & Queen Anne’s

A powerful winter storm will continue to significantly impact Kent and Queen Anne’s Counties  today. Low pressure was in the process of intensifying off the northern North Carolina coast and the Virginia capes early this morning. This potent storm will track east-northeastward during today and accelerate away from our area tonight.  Heavy snow and strong winds will impact a good part of the region. Blizzard warning remains in effect until 7 pm this evening.

Heavy snow was occurring across the area early this morning and will continue through much of today. The snow will fall heavily at times with rates up to 1 to 3 inches an hour. the heaviest snow will occur through about midday today. the snow may mix with sleet at times early this morning mainly across southern Talbot and Caroline counties…and may be intermittent there as well. Total snow accumulations of 18 to 24 inches are expected. An increasing northeast to north wind with gusts of 40 to 50 mph into early this afternoon will create extensive blowing and drifting snow…along with whiteout conditions. The wind combined with the falling snow will create extremely hazardous conditions including greatly reduced visibilities to less than one quarter mile at times.

The Washington College nordic ski trails will be set at 4 pm on Saturday for weekend cross country skiing (April 6-7).
The n ordic ski trails, brought to you by “fly by night track setters” are located west of the railroad tracks around the old women’s field hockey field, Shriver Field and the softball field. Excursion from this loop can be made down into the (highly underutilized) railroad tracks which are owned by the taxpayers of the State of Maryland. “Figure 8″ nordic downhill competition will be held on Sunday prior to the super bowl before sunset on the slope between Shriver Field and the grass soccer practice fields.

Skiing conditions today…..”Sierra Cement” and lots of it….get ‘er while ya’ can!

And keep in mind next spring, summer and fall when you find yourself in your car behind a combine or gang-disk or planter, impatiently blowing your horn and cursing the local farmer, keep in mind who may have been the one to plow your lane or back road all without asking and without expectation of payment. It’s easy to complain about the ‘high’ costs of food when your mouth is full.
