Washington College Film Series “Good Hair”

When comedian Chris Rock’s daughter asked, “Daddy, how come I don’t have good hair?” he decided to find out who had put that question into his little girl’s head. The result is an insightful, entertaining documentary and Sundance award winner.

Photographer Mitch Epstein’s current work examines how energy is produced and used in the American landscape. Made on forays to energy production sites and their environs, these pictures question the power of nature, government, corporations, and mass consumption in the United States. Epstein is the author of seven books including his latest “American Power.” His photographs are featured in numerous major museum collections, including New York’s Metropolitan Museum, Museum of Modern Art and Whitney Museum of American Art. Co-sponsored by the Center for Environment & Society and the Department of Art and Art History. Book signing to follow.

“Revolt on Goose Island,” a talk by Kari Lydersen

Lydersen is a staff writer at the Washington Post and a frequent contributor to

The Chicago Reporter, In These Times, ColorLines, Contratiempo and the Earth

Island Journal. She specializes in environmental and social justice stories,

including a focus on Latin America and immigrant communities. She is author of

“Out of the Sea and Into the Fire: Latin American-US Immigration in the Global

Age” and “Revolt on Goose Island” and co-author, with Wafaa Bilal, of “Shoot an Iraqi: Art, Life and Resistance Under the Gun.” She was awarded the 2009 Ethnic Media

Fellowship from the USC Annenberg’s Institute for Justice and Journalism. She

teaches Community News at Columbia College.

The Vagina Monologues

Washington College’s Student Affairs Office presents Playwright/Founder Eve Ensler’s award winning play The Vagina Monologues. 2009 marks the Monologue’s 11year anniversary and with it Chestertown’s 4th Annual production. The community, in collaboration with Washington College, has raised awareness and money for For All Seasons Inc., a local rape crisis center and help hotline. Within the past few years the production has gained popularity and, in turn, increased awareness and contributions. We are hoping for the best and largest turn out this year. Tickets are $15, call for reservations.

The Kings of Crownsville have a fun-loving rootsy sound that transports listeners from the streets of New Orleans out onto old Route 66 picking up influences from nearly every page of the American songbook along the way.
